Nostalgic Snack

When I was a kid, Mom would make buttered tortillas for us (seven of us kids) for breakfast then send us on our way to grade school.  It has been a whirlwind raising my own kids.  They are super picky.  The older one doesn’t like tortilla with just butter.  She prefers quesadillas.  I’ve made a quesadilla for her once but I could never get the cheese amount exactly the way she likes it (but I think she likes it thick and gooey).  She didn’t complain but she hasn’t asked me to make it again.  As for my youngest, she doesn’t go near tortillas or cheese.

I like mine plain with butter just the way Mom made it.

A Day Downtown

The family went to watch a baseball game at the Coors Field in Denver.  The game started out great but the Rockies lost.  We weren’t there to see the end because we left when the second thunderstorm came through.  I took some photos with my phone and did some editing with VSCO.

This first photo was taken when people cleared the seats because the rain was coming down hard.  Everyone moved to the covered seatings or behind the stadium where the food court is.  We waited in our seats for about 20 minutes and then the intercom came on and said everyone had to leave the covered seatings because lightning was coming through.  It was then that we decided to head home.

3 Current Epic Music Favorites

July was a busy month.  Swim is done for my youngest.  It was very intense and we’re glad to be done with it but we will probably join a less rigorous swim team during the school year.  School starts for my youngest this coming Monday.  She’ll be in 5th grade, the last grade in grade school where we live, then she’ll start 6th grade in middle school.  When I think about it, I get teary-eyed, so I try not to let myself get too deep into thoughts about it.

My oldest will be starting 10th grade in a week.  She loves POMs.  If you don’t know what POMs is, it’s a competitive sport where they compete their skills with other high schools.  The best go to national every year to compete for first place.  But, they also do volunteering and fundraise, and attend and cheer at all the varsity football games, other varsity games, and some junior varsity games.  Although she loves POMs, a part of her misses dance.  A few weeks ago she was so sad that she cried her eyes out begging to take a lyrical class with the dance studio.  So, husband and I signed her up and now she’s happy as can be.  She loves to dance.  There are so many facets of dance and some of them she doesn’t like or want to deal with, but dance, mostly just lyrical, she’s passionate about.

On the 3rd of this month, husband and I celebrated our 16th anniversary.  We had lunch and then in the evening, went to see the movie, Valerian.  In between, we took our youngest to school for registration and to meet her 5th grade teacher, and took our oldest to gynmastics (required for POMs).

Anyway, enough jabbering.  Here are my top 3 epic songs I’ve been listening to so far.

Hiking

This was my first hike this year. This was a really easy hike. The landscape was mainly flat so I did’t get much workout in, which is fine for now since it’s been awhile. The views were beautiful and very green.

We laid down a couple of rocks for Kat, the girl who passed away in May from suicide, who was the dance friend of my daughter.  We also scattered some wild flowers that was given at her memorial at the top of the hill we climbed to.  Maybe we’ll visit this place again in a couple of years and see if the flowers survived.

Dance Performance Photos

Earlier this month my girls performed their last dance recital. They’ve moved on to other activities as mentioned in a previous post. This was a bittersweet performance not only because my daughters won’t be dancing anymore (my oldest just loves ballet and lyrical), but also because a girl at the dance studio committed suicide and it came as a shock to everyone. She was only fourteen years old. She was a beautiful girl with a kind heart. It’s heartbreaking that no one saw her internal pain.  My oldest daughter was a good friend to her and she is having a hard time dealing with the loss. The last group photo (the 9th photo) below of my oldest daughter and the other dancers was a tribute dance to the girl.

These are photos from rehearsal since we’re not allowed to take photos on the actual day of performance.

Mixed Media Layouts

My kids have been busy with summer activities so I haven’t had much time to do anything really.  Both the girls have left the world of dance.  One moved on to Poms and the other to swim – although swim is only for the summer.  I haven’t decided if I’ll be putting her in anything in the fall and winter.  She isn’t too enthusiastic about physical activities, except for maybe running, but even that I don’t think she takes very seriously.  I’m still looking for a voice coach for her because she’s very passionate about singing but I just can’t seem to find anyone in the area.

With the “no time” I have, I’ve somehow managed to finish four layouts I’ve tried to finish since March.  These layouts are from a year-long course I’ve been taking online by Wilna Furstenberg who is an amazing artist.  I’m actually taking two of her online classes: Art to Heart and Artventure.  Art to Heart focuses on the self following scriptures from the bible and Artventure focuses on family.  I’ve learned so much from these courses.  I’ve learned not to be afraid to mix different types of media and it’s been very fun and stress relieving, except for the journaling part.  I always have a hard time journaling.  I find that strange because I love to write.  The mind is so mysterious.

Here are the latest layouts. As mentioned, they were started in March and I completed them earlier this week.

On a side note, I purchased a couple of different coloring media: Derwent Watersoluble Pencils and Caran D’ache Neocolor II Watersoluble Pastels.  I’ve been watching YouTube videos on these two products and comparing them to Prima Marketing and a few other brands with similar items.  I chose to go with these two because they’ve been in the market longer and  I wanted to get a feel for them before trying the newer brands.
